Hearing the music, honing the mind?

In addition to last weeks entry, a citation from a recent article in Scientific American:
"Music produces profound and lasting changes in the brain. Schools should add classes, not cut them."

  1. Music is great, no doubt about that, but that it changes the brain is not an argument in favour of music.

First problem with the argument: dropping a piano on someone also "produces profound and lasting changes". It's not enough to change something; it ought also be a positive change.

Second problem with the argument, this time in the So What? category: just about everything you do changes the brain in some way, as a trivial consequence of the demolition of Cartesian dualism.
